How Far in Advance Should You Plan a Luxury Trip?

Realistic lead times by trip type, and what actually gets harder the longer you wait.

Typical lead times

These are working ranges, not rules. High season, school holidays and small-capacity properties all push them earlier.

  • City breaks and short escapes — 2 to 4 months
  • Honeymoons — 8 to 12 months
  • Luxury and river cruises — 9 to 18 months
  • Safari and expedition — 10 to 18 months
  • Destination weddings and groups — 12 to 18 months

What runs out first

It is rarely availability in general. It is the specific villa with the view, the guide everyone requests, the connecting rooms, and the single suite category that makes the whole trip work. Those are the constraints that reward early planning.
