Costa Rica: Two Coasts, One Week, and the Drive in Between
Rainforest, volcano and beach in a single trip is entirely possible. What surprises people is how long the roads take and how much the season decides.

Distances are short and slow
On the map the country is small. On the ground, mountain roads, single-lane bridges and weather turn ninety kilometres into three hours. A week with four bases is mostly a week in a vehicle.
Two bases in a week works well. Three works if one of the moves is a short internal flight rather than a long drive.
The classic pairing, and why it works
Most first trips combine somewhere green and active with somewhere flat and restful: a volcano or cloud-forest region first, a coast second. The order matters — doing the walking, hanging bridges and early-morning wildlife while you still have energy, then finishing at sea level.
Which coast depends on what you want. They have different weather patterns, different cultures and very different beaches, and the choice changes the trip more than most people expect.
Season is not a detail
The country has a drier season and a green, wetter one, and the pattern differs between regions. Green season often means bright mornings and heavy afternoon rain, which is workable if your days are planned around it and miserable if they are not.

- Want fewer people, lower prices and dramatic landscape — travel in green season with morning-weighted plans.
- Want wildlife — ask what is active on your dates; nesting, migration and mating seasons all move.
Travelling with children
Costa Rica is one of the easier long-haul destinations for families: the activities are genuinely interesting for a wide age range, and the guiding culture is strong. The limits are the drives and the heat, both of which are solved by staying longer in fewer places.
Minimum ages apply to some adventure activities, and they vary by operator. Worth confirming before the trip is built around them.
